Music, and the expressive arts of India.

A study visit to Southern India

Saturday 29th July – Weds 9th August 2017

The aim of the trip is to visit parts of the South Indian state of Karnataka, to learn about the rich musical traditions that this part of India offers, to learn about the expressive arts that link to music in India and will also explore elements of India’s changing and developing cultural geography.

During the process you will learn about musical and expressive arts traditions of the region of south India. Beginning in the city of Bangalore we will look at classical and folk musical traditions with opportunities for musical appreciation, master classes and performances. It is likely that we will focus on Hindustani and Carnatic Tabla drumming and vocal traditions. We hope to include opportunities to explore classical and folk dances, watch an Odissi master class and join in a Garba folk dance workshop. You will journey to the rich cultural hertitage site of Hampi, to experience the extraordinary ancient temple ruins, and we aim to include an experience of a shadow puppetry activity from North Karnataka. Although the visit focuses strongly on music and the arts this visit will implicitly explore the human and physical geography of the area and will look at how this part of the country is changing and developing.

Cost: In country costs will be between £800- £950 covering food, accommodation, transport and guidance. You will need to buy the flight which costs between 400-600 pounds, and a visa and insurance. The total cost for the trip including all of these things should between £1400- £1750. Full details of the costs of the trip are found on the further information sheet downloadable here.
