The Institute of Education Alternative PGCE Placement

IOE 2014

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.Mark Twain

4th - 19th March 2017

This is a unique opportunity to have a very different Alternative Placement while on your PGCE. We will be spending a fortnight in the spring term at an educational centre close to the Indian city of Bangalore, a fast growing, high-tech but also very traditional Indian city, home to almost 10million people of which 10% are under 6. Education is seen as crucial and held in very high esteem but class sizes are big and many teachers not trained as you are.

We will be spending 2 weeks in two very different Indian schools, and we will also work with a girl's home. The intervening weekend will be spent exploring the local area.

•We will be leaving on Saturday 4th March and returning on Sunday 19th March. You will spend Monday-Friday of both weeks in primary schools, in or close to Bangalore and will have the weekend in between for activities, excursions, and additional input.

•We will stay at an educational centre near Bangalore called Sangam where all your accommodation and catering will be provided and which is a popular centre for teachers, student and practising, from both India and the UK. Please look through the Sangam site in more detail to find out more about their centre.

•The total price of the trip will be around £1200 which is self-funded but we will discuss ways of helping you to raise some of this money. This will be the fifth time that the Institute has run this trip.
